How I feel about it all: sadsad

Today is a sad one for the Primrose clan--our much-loved kitty Stormy Elizabeth was gently put to sleep this afternoon. Her health and her weight had been going downhill for the past several weeks, despite thyroid meds and a good appetite. Her breathing had become more and more laboured. The chest X-rays didn't show the lung cancer I'd expected, but rather end-stage emphysema. The vet said she didn't have more than a couple of weeks at best, and that there was no treatment.

The good things are that Mary was able to say goodbye to her (Stormy was Mary's cat more than anyone's, even though she lived with me), and also that I was able to be with her when she died. The vet and her assistant were caring and beyond wonderful. Her passing was peaceful and she purred throughout all of it, and I got to pet her and comfort her the whole time.

She was a little smokey-gray tabby with a sweet face and a disposition to match, and we loved her a lot. I can't remember the exact date of her birth, but we're positive she was at least sixteen or seventeen years old. In other words, she had a lovely, happy, long life in the company of a lot of people (and pets) who loved her--we should all be as fortunate.

She'll be cremated and then her ashes and those of our wonderful old Rhett kitty will be sprinkled on our old property on Block Island (where Mary's dad still lives and where Stormy grew up).

I told Mary that I'm not sure that cats have an afterlife--heck, I'm not even convinced that people do, but if people DO, then surely their pets are there with them. Either way, I like to think of her--and all my lost kitties (and one amazing dog)-- hanging out and playing with their buds over at the Rainbow Bridge. It may be hokey, but I don't care.

Bye, honey. Say hi to everyone for me. ♥♥♥♥

Me too--only I'm not sorry for her, just for us who are left behind. She had an awesome life. No cat could ask for better. Thank you, my dear. *cuddles you*

*hugs* I'm sorry, hon, but it sounds like it all happened in the least stressful way possible for all.

She's probably chilling in a sea of catnip as we speak.

Yeah, it was totally stress-free for her. I hope I'm as well-treated someday.

Yeah, she'd like that. Maybe even a tuna-juice cocktail for a chaser. :) :)

these cats... they're such a part of our lives.
I do share your sorrow and I understand as I love dearly my own Douce and i had recently some alarm about her health.(she's doing well at the moment-mostly). Thank you for telling about Stormy.

many sympathies :( It's hard when they've been part of the family for so long, but at least she lived long and prospered, which is what matters.

We had to put my dog Roz to sleep when she was eight. I think that's even sadder, somehow. Stormy had a great life. I don't think she was sad to go at all. It's us that's left behind that have all the bummers, y'know?

Yes, indeed - I've had two who've both made it to 17 and losing them was hard, even though for both of them it was time, and physically a relief from pain.

It seems weird, but when it was finally over, I felt that we'd done something really good for her. Which, when you think of it, we did. I'm a sap, so I like to think that somewhere she's running around and rolling in the grass and taking deep, wonderful breaths of sweet air.

I'm so sorry to hear this. It's always tough to lose a pet. I agree, all our pets that have gone on are all playing together and keeping watch over us.

Thank you, dear. Mary and I had had a toast to her earlier tonight. We're planning on getting some sour cream and onion potato chips in her honour, too, because she loved them (no lie, she really did!).

Nope, it doesn't. It's easier for Stormy, though, and I can't imagine she's not in someplace wonderful. It's weird how I throw my agnostic away when it comes to my pets.

Kelly, I am so, so, so sorry to hear that you lost Stormy. I'm so GLAD she had a wonderful, long, happy life, and a peaceful, love-filled passing, but I'm sitting here crying for you and Mary and all of y'all who loved her. For whatever it's worth, I very much do believe that pets go to heaven, whatever heaven is, and that they'll be there waiting with wags and purrs and licks when we get there. Blessings and comforting memories of happy days to y'all, and peaceful rest to your good kitty. (((((((hug))))))))

primroseburrows at 2009-12-08 03:14 (UTC) ()
I'm thinking we'll be getting a lot of wags and purrs and licks someday, because we're pet people. I have one kitty now (Natalie, a noisy but sweet Siamese adopted when my niece couldn't take her where she lives), and I say that when she goes (after a very long time, I'm hoping) that I won't have any more pets, but, um, yeah. I lie like a rug to myself. :)

Thank you so much for your words. They really do mean a lot, my dear. *sends cuddles and love to you and Puck*

I am so sorry you lost a family members. I personally believe in an afterlife for both animals and humans (lean toward reincarnation). 16 is a long time to live and I know she was loved.

*massive hugs* Kel, I'm so so so sorry. I know well how hard it is to lose a furry member of the family, but you can take a modicum of comfort in the fact that you indeed gave your kitty a long, happy, love-filled life.

<3 Stormy!

I didn't show it much during her life, but I really did love Stormy. It's odd now that she's gone because she's basically been around my entire life. I have Rose to thank for bringing me around to her towards the end; she really pointed out and showed me how wonderful she could be. I'm sure she's romping around in a forest of cat nip trees, munching on infinite sour scream and onion chips, and sipping tuna juice cocktails with Rhett. Farewell kitty, I hope to see you in 60+ years =)

Re: <3 Stormy!

I never thought you didn't like her, dear. :)

Yeah, you were like three years older than her, so you wouldn't remember not having her.

I'm sure she's part of a whole posse of cats, with Roz as their Seekrit Weapon mascot. ;)

And OMG, you have a Rhett icon!
