I'll bet you think this song is about you, don't you, don't you?

I haven't been commenting on the wank in general because, frankly, between this and QAF wank, my cup runneth over, but I had to tell you that you hit the nail on the head. Honestly. Not only that, but you pummeled it into the wall.

Well said. Every last word.

I would love to learn more about QAF wank.

Oh. No. You. Wouldn't. Trust me on this one. But I'll give you the Cliff's Notes version, anyway...

Remember, this is a group of mostly kids here at HP fandom. Or, well, young(ish) adults. For the most part (I think). I think that those of us who find it funny are among the older, more settled of the population - we don't take it all so seriously. The younger ones are the life-or-death model, so to speak (at least IMO). But QAF fandom is older, generally speaking (I'd like to think so, at least, considering the fact that there are naked men simulating gay sex in the show. Often). Supposedly more mature. And yet... it's astounding, but they have an incredible talent for sounding a lot like these HP fans.

They do things such as telling the creators of QAF (CowLip, in this case) where they messed up with canon (sound familiar?) and how they should fix it to get back on track (familiar again?) and that they "owe it to the fans" (familiar yet again?) to make things right. Telling CL that they went OOC (excuse me, doesn't the creator of canon have the right to determine characterization?), and that "this character wouldn't do that", as if they'd know better than the creators. Now I won't say that CL are perfect - I'm sure they've screwed up a time or two, but the utter presumptuousness of it all boggles my mind.

And those who are happy with how the series ended are called names, and those who aren't are called other names, and there's no middle ground. Unless you're quiet and sit on the sidelines, chewing your popcorn, watching the action and waiting for intermission. But intermission never lasts long - there's always more wank right around the corner making it a very fragile and very "clique-y" fandom.

The show rocks. The fandom's scary. Or at least, that's been my experience. And I tell all the people I run across online the same thing. Watch the show, love the show, enjoy the show - avoid the fandom.

Yeah. So that's it in a nutshell. Are you sorry you asked?

*g* I suppose all fandoms have their wank, or there wouldn't be Fandom Wank in the first place. *fondly remembers X Files wank*
