Belated birthday drabble for sam80853. It's not the one I started to write. This one I did immediately after waking up from dreaming that Geoffrey, Oliver, and Ellen were all living in a house I used to own. Sort of. Dreams are funny. And I seem to remember telling people that S&A doesn't NEED fic, because it's complete and doesn't have loose ends. Which it doesn't. Er. *blames muse*

Anyway, this one's for you, kiddo, such that it is.

SPOILERS FOR THE LAST EPISODE OF SLINGS & ARROWS. DO NOT CLICK IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN ALL THREE SEASONS. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

In between the quiet, Geoffrey can almost hear him.

That's not how I would have done it.

I told you so.

What kind of fool costume is
that?

Really, Geoffrey, why can't you see that the role's too much for her? It's a miracle she can even dress herself in the morning.

Except he can't, really.

The words are an echo, a memory of sound, entirely inadequate. Signifying nothing.

A fool of a man missing someone who was only half-there in the first place.

Tonight, lying awake in the darkness, he hears his own voice in his head, clear as ice.

I miss you, Oliver.

I love you.

In between the quiet, he can almost hear the echoed reply:

I love you.

Be happy, Geoffrey, for both of us.

For all of us.

He turns, pulls Ellen closer. She wraps herself around him in sleep, a soft smile on her face. He kisses her shoulder. Closes his eyes.

The rest is silence.

ETA: SPOILERS IN COMMENTS, ALSO. EXERCISE CAUTION, Y'ALL

Awwwww, that's lovely. Thank you!

I love that sentence! God, Geoffrey really missed Oliver. So much!

Thank you ::hugs::!

I think he really did miss Oliver. And I think that if there's anything left unresolved in the series, it's that part of it. But I think he'll eventually come to terms with it. Because he is happy, after all. *g*

You're welcome, dear. *hugs back*

I have no idea what fandom this is from, but it's lovely. The last line especially. I love that it is so succinct but says so much.

Also lovey, are you going to be about tonight? Joan the Bastard misses you.

The last line is stolen shamelessly from sai William Shakespeare. It's also the last line of Hamlet. And the title of the drabble, if I gave it one.

The fandom? I guess you could call it a fandom. It's really a pseudopod (don't ask).

It's Slings & Arrows, dear one, AKA The Best Thing That Ever Happened to Television in the History of the Universe. I'm going to make sure you see it, love. Because I'm pretty sure it's now my Sacred Duty to make sure that everyone who breathes does. You're at the top of my list, currently. *g*

I should be around later. I have a CD to commune with first. Stay up, you'll see me. *g*

Well, let it never be said that I don't have good taste. And as soon as I finish this reply, the plan is to bang my head on my desk until wooziness ensues as punishment for not recognizing the last line of my favorite of all of Mr. Shakespeare's works. Oh, the shame, the shame.

This was sweet, and I totally heard Stephen Ouimette's voice saying the Oliver lines, you nailed his voice.

YAAAAAAY! *wipes away a tear for Geoffrey/Oliver and their screwed-up love*

S&A *needs* Ellen Fanshawe fic. *nodnodnod*

I've just found the link at http://del.icio.us/sam80853/slingsandarrows.
It's a lovely story! Thank you!
I think S&A does need fic. I write S&A stories (and poetry) too and I really enjoy it. The show cover several important topics that should to be discussed. And it's just great show with wonderful character you want to meet again and again. That's what fics are for.

Wow, thanks! Yay for comments on old stuff.

What I meant by 'doesn't need fic' is that S&A doesn't need anything added to it to make it complete, because it's all there in the show. Discussion and fic to add to the wonderfulness and wonder what happens next, what happened before, yes, definitely.

They break my heart, and you did it all over again with the barest minimum of lines. Beautifully done.

Wow, thanks! I love them a whole very lot. :)

It helps matters wrt reading them that I'm trying to write them of late, but this was beautifully evocative.

Wow, I'm glad you liked this! (I love it when people read my old stuff). S&A is seven kinds of awesome. :D
